What is the Study Permit?

With its world-renowned, higher education institutions, it’s no surprise that Canada ranks as one of the best countries to study abroad. From its vibrant campus communities to its rich career prospects, pursuing an undergraduate or Master’s degree in Canada consistently remains attractive to international students. But beyond getting accepted by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), foreign students are required to get a Study Permit to study in Canada.

This document, issued by the Government of Canada, allows you to reside in Canada for the duration of your study program. The Study Permit, however, should not be confused with a Visa: the official authorization permitting you to enter Canada. Rather, it is a form of Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) that enables you to pursue higher education at the institution you have been accepted to. In this article, we will be covering who can apply for this permit, what the process is, and what we at Cian Immigration can do to assist you.

As experienced Registered Immigration Consultants, we are dedicated to simplifying the entire application process. We take the burden off worrying about getting every detail right—so you can simply focus on your big journey to study abroad in Canada.

Who can apply for it?

Exclusively for international students, the Study Permit grants temporary residency for those wishing to pursue higher education in Canada. While COVID-19 has led to a few changes to the standard requirements, here is a complete list of the eligibility criteria for the application:

  • Received a letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution. To apply for the Student Permit, you must already be enrolled at an approved college or university in Canada. Since COVID-19, these institutions must be on the list of those with a COVID-19 readiness plan.
  • Have enough funds to cover your study’s duration. You must be able to prove that you have enough financial support to cover your tuition fees, living expenses, and any return transportation. This includes both yourself and any family members who intend to accompany you.
  • Are in good health & have no criminal record. To be allowed to pursue your education in Canada, being in a good state of health is imperative—as well as understanding the need to obey federal law. In the cases you need a medical exam or a police certificate, you will be required to get one.
  • Prove that you will leave Canada at the end of your study. For the date that your Student Permit is set to expire, you must be able to show a Canadian immigration officer when and how you will leave the country.

What’s next once you submit?

Once you’ve completed your online application, depending on your country of residence, it could take up to 3 months to receive your Study Permit. To see the status of your application, simply create an account on the official “Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada” website and log in from there. Along with a daily status update, here is where you can see if you’re asked to submit more information to complete your application—as well as whether you need a medical exam or police certificate.

Once your anticipated wait is over and your application has been approved, you will receive a letter of introduction which you must bring to you when you travel to Canada. Upon your arrival, once this letter is shown to immigration officers, you’ll be granted a Study Permit on-site. For those who are already within the country, your Study Permit will be delivered to you by post. If your application was refused, you will receive a letter of explanation detailing the decision.
